Bio:
Erwan Garel is a Principal Research Scientist at the Centre of Environmental and Marine Science (CIMA, Algarve University), specialized in Coastal Dynamics. He is member of CIMA steering committee, and Vice-Coordinator of the Research group about Coastal and Marine morphodynamics. Erwan Garel obtained his PhD in Marine Geosciences at the European University Institute for the Sea (Brest, France) in 2001. After 2 years (2001-2003) of teaching Geology at French Universities (Brest and Le Mans), he was a postdoc fellow (2003-2006) at the National Oceanographic Centre, Southampton (UK), one of the world top institutes for Marine Science. In 2007, E. Garel was employed as a Marine Geologist for habitat mapping at the Institute of Geosciences, Kiel University (Germany). In 2008-2015, E. Garel specialized in the morphology and dynamics of estuaries and adjacent coastal areas as a grant holder at CIMA (Algarve University). In 2015, E. Garel was contracted as a Principal Research Scientist by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Through his career, Erwan Garel has carried out observational studies related to hydrodynamics and sediment transport in coastal areas. This work has broadly concentrated on estuarine physical and sedimentary processes. He is also specialised in environmental monitoring, including for the assessment of impacts induced by human activities (dredging, marine renewable energy projects, dams). He has published 32 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 19 of them as a senior (corresponding) author.
